It's a brand new year- 2011- and what I have been thinking about a lot lately is the word "day": today, yesterday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, etc., 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week, 365 days in a year. Often times when a new year arrives people begin to set goals, or resolutions, to make the best of these days. Lose weight, spend more time with family, eat healthier, travel, save money, get organized, and the list could go on and on. I'm all for these wonderful ideas, however, part of me says "why wait?" If you realize after a couple months into your resolution you're not doing so well with it, do you quit and say well I guess I have to wait until next year to make this resolution again? It should be everyday that we challenge ourselves to new goals and new opportunities; we don't have to wait until New Year's each year.
The biggest reason I began to think about "days" did not necessarily have to do with new year's resolutions (that was just a little bonus side topic that happened to kind of 'fit' my idea). What really got me thinking was how we spend our days. Every single day is a gift to us from God. Each morning when we wake up, before our feet even hit the floor, we already have a reason to be thankful. It's like everyday is Christmas morning because we get to "unwrap" such a wonderful gift, revealing what He has in store for us as we go about our day. In the modern-day world, it's customary to express some form of gratitude when we receive a gift. Whether we thank someone in person, write a thank you note, send a thank you basket, or tell them in a phone call, most would do their best to let someone know how much they appreciate their gift. Well I have yet to discover what God's address or telephone number is :) but that doesn't stop me from wanting to thank Him for each day He blesses me with. There are so many ways to thank God for your life; and a lot of times not everyone's is the same because of our own personal spiritual relationship with God and our own personal prayer life. However, a fairly easy way to show gratitude is just to live that day for Him, glorifying Him in it all. This can be done in SO many different ways all around the world, changing from person to person, but just be sure to thank Him :) One of my favorite praise and worship songs can attest to this : "better is one day in Your courts, better is one day in Your house, better is one day in Your courts, than thousands elsewhere." We are telling God that one single day with Him, is better than thousands and thousands of days not spent with Him (quick math: 1,000 days is almost 3 years; so we're comparing 1 day to 3+ years!) How amazing that is! So first, thank God for each day, and second, spend that day He has given you, inviting Him to join you in all that you do!
